The House of Dreams

dreamsMalutka's Fairy's Grotto was everything I had hoped for and more. Since this unique cave house in Spain had joined our directory I had wanted to visit it. There are unusual places to stay and then there are REALLY unusual places to stay. Some owners, I can tell, have put their heart and soul into creating something special and I found this to be one.

MALUTKA FAIRY's GROTTO - take a peak!

We arrived in the evening to a sparkling mass of lights that cover the courtyard. Once inside the magic continued. We wondered the maze of rooms in search of the fairy's secret cubby-holes and all manner of other treasures carefully placed for our delight.

Apart from all the creative charm the cave has cosy Morrocan and Andalucian decor, 3 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, dining and sitting room. Everything you need for a base for exploring this region around Baza. On first light I ventured up the ladder to the roof terrace and up again to reach the full vantage point. A pretty view to the mountain, over allotments and fields and the top of the town. Here you could recline on a sunlounger and even take a dip in the rooftop bath to cool off in summer. Birds were twittering happily and I feel myself relax - the first morning of my holiday. The tension of my busy life drifts off in the light breeze.

There are plenty of things to do in the area to create an interesting week away and don't forget that travelling in Spain can be just as interesting in Winter with lots of blue sky days - with the bonus of a cavehouse staying at a pretty static temperature. (There is heating and air-con too). Staying at Malutka's Cave House costs just £50 a night for up to 6 guests.

decorSome suggestions -

Lake Negratin - Andalucias largest freshwater lake. There is a lakeside restaurant and canoeing and sailing are possible at El Negratin Club Nautico. There is a spring water pool their called Los Baños de Zujar - a thermal mineral pool. It can be accessed from Los Baños Restaurant.

Mount Jabalcon can offer great views from the top. Walk a trail or mountain bike around it or to the summit.

Another town with interesting coned cave houses not far away is Guadix - an interesting place with impressive monuments, views to the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

From Baza it is 1 hour 15 minutes drive to Granada. So that is a good airport to fly into and perhaps spend a couple of days enjoying that lovely city. Almeria is an 1 and a half hours away also with an airport.

If you have longer to spend in this area include a beach stay at Agua Amarga in the Cabo de Gata National Park. One of our favourite stops for a laid back break.

(Just to add, Baza is the birthplace of QUIRKYACCOM.COM. It was while we were staying here 7 years ago that we came up with the idea for the directory.)
