My Kinda Place.....

I am not a fan of 4 or 5 star stereotypical hotels so Helgas Folly suited me fine on a recent visit to Kandy. This abode is definately a quirky place and very very fascinating. I should say that Helga's Folly is also the personal home of Helga so I felt like one of her house guests. If you are lucky you will see Madame Helga gliding through the hotel - unmistakable: tall, elegant, and stunning and dressed like no other. The Folly IS Helga. And this is the fascination - you have to see both to understand what the place is about. The food is pretty good too. No TV but the best program anyway is the large troop of monkeys on their visit at dusk. Staying here was the highlight of my visit to Sri Lanka. So very different yet memorable - whereas I have already forgotten the other hotels I stayed in on the island.
Like colour and art? This is heaven.

Helga's Folly is like no other hotel. It is an Aladdin's den full of eccentric props, dripping candles, historic photos, media snippets, and everywhere colour and art all over the walls from floor to ceiling, no corner left untouched. The rooms are individual - our room had a large fish painted in the bath. The service and food is good and we met Helga who wandered around the dining room welcoming everyone. This is a pool in the garden and our kids loved the mini movie theatre! If you want somewhere different - this is it!
