The Lazy Duck has lightweight camping, Alpine hut-style hostel accommodation for up to 8 and 3 wonderful mountain huts for couples surrounded by ancient Caledonian forest and Highland wildlife. There is also a hot tub and sauna, all set within the Cairngorms National Park.

The larch clad WOODMAN'S HUT is a rustic hideaway for 2 with some quirky luxury - an eco-cabin for romantics in the Cairngorms National Park. Rainwater is collected in vintage oak whisky barrels from the roof and heated in copper kettles for the open-sky shower. It has a dreamy veranda looking directly onto the Cairngorm mountains and a luxurious king-size box bed with a stargazer window above it. Lighting of the pine clad interior is by candle lanterns supported by a subtle 12-volt battery system and heating is by pine logs slow-burning in the wood stove. Cooking is with a two ring gas stove oven and grill, and the burn or stream provides the 'fridge'. The tranquillity there is total. The private, sweet-smelling composting toilet and hot water bush shower complete the picture.

THE DUCK'S NEST hut, again just for 2, perches on the edge of the waterfowl ponds. Guests have a clear view of Goldeneye, Widgeon and others including the famous exhibition Aylesbury Lazy Ducks. The Duck's Nest's charm lies in its cosy location and, most importantly, in its handcrafted design. Wood-washed red pine walls sit below hand adzed beams of Douglas Fir while the fitted furniture in Larchwood is itself a work of art. The roof is clad with Tomintoul stone and feeds rainwater to the whisky barrels and is then piped on to grand brass tap over the stone sink inside. The nearby bespoke and private composting toilet and hot water bush shower get rave, if surprised, reviews. In this luxury eco-lodge, there is minimal mains electricity for subtle lighting, a small fridge, gas cooking and of course the wood burning stove. The stargazer above the sumptuous king-size Hebridean box bed together with the gentle movement of stream water outside suggest the probability for a truly restful night.

These cabins are popular and generally get booked up in advance.

THE LAMBING BOTHY - sleeps 2 in a charming box bed with dining and kitchen area around it. Identical in design to our other two mountain huts, watch skipping lambs and foraging hens, deer peeping from the wood and salads growing.

The LAZY DUCK HUT HOSTEL is a fresh, colourful, snug, normally PRIVATE USE mountain hut style bunkhouse for up to 8 people tucked away in the fringes of the forest. Semi open-plan, there is a bright spacious sleeping gallery with a double and 2 singles is accessed by a ship's ladder. Downstairs there are 4 beds in 2 sets of cabin bunks adjacent to a pristine shower room. All warmed by a wood-burning stove, there is a snug all-in-one kitchen/living area with a music player, CDs, books, radio, wi-fi and games box. Outside the door, a sheltered covered garden with large outdoor table, open fireplace cum BBQ and basket chairs provide space for relaxing evenings around the log fire. You are invited to cut logs from the stack provided for this fire and leave a good pile for those coming after you.

The tiny 4-PITCH CAMPING GROUND for 2-3 person tents only, with a candlelit, dining and cooking tables, basket chair furnished wet-weather shelter, a chimenea fireplace with tree-stump seats, 2 swings for 'children' of any age and the now legendary Lazy Duck hot-water shower in the forest.

An infra-red SAUNA for 2 with music, wood-fired wooden HOT TUB - sometimes may be booked @ £7.50 per head and with native and exotic ducks provide companions for a chill-out. Deer, red squirrels and crested tits are the nearest neighbours.

WiFi throughout. 02 is the only reasonable phone reception and that struggles sometimes.

The hostel is now rented normally as a whole with prices starting mid-week from £95 a night for 4 people with a supplement of £19 per extra person - up to 8 in total. On the weekend the price is £195 for up to 8 guests. SINGLE NIGHT STAYS POSSIBLE ONLY IN THE HOSTEL.

The Woodman's Hut and The Duck's Nest and Lambing Bothy are £95 a night and £115 per night on the weekend. 2 NIGHT MINIMUM STAY IN THE HUTS.

Because of the free-ranging waterfowl, Lazy Duck are unable to accommodate pets. Camping is £15 for a tent with 1 person + £5 per person. Camping is offered between 1 May to 31 October.
