Named by the Sunday Times as one of Europe's finest holiday properties, and the only Cave House in their Top 50 'Sensational Villas' list!

The Guardian (travel section 23/08/2014) says:-

"We arrive at dusk, while it’s still light enough to tell that Malutka’s Andalucían Grotto has a spectacular view. The street is on a ledge of rock, high above the town of Baza. From the terrace, we look across the scorched flatlands of the Altiplano de Granada towards the hazy hills of the Sierra de Castril. The air is scented with jasmine. There are tortoises in the garden. Fairy lights dangle from a vine."........"We open the front door and step inside the hill. First is a tiny rock-cut salon, bright with tiles and glass and mirrored textiles. Beyond is a little dining room, an old-fashioned parlour with a fireplace and a small kitchen. We think at first that there’s only one bedroom, but when I open a vividly painted door which I thought was a cupboard, I find two more. All the rooms have been scooped out of the rock. They are whitewashed and womb-like, with low ceilings, Arabic arches, carved niches, bumpy walls and pick-marked surfaces. As a welcome, Malutka has lit dozens of lamps and candles. The whole place glitters with colour and flickering light."....................

This cave house is unlike any other dwelling. It promises to be a unique and fascinating experience, both beautiful and enchanting. It is situated high up on the outskirts of Baza and offers a panoramic view of the town below and the mountains beyond.

Like all troglodyte dwellings that have been sympathetically restored and only modernised where necessary, the cave house retains its inherent charm and quirkiness. The hewn-out rooms, with their arched ceilings, differ in shape and size, each one being on a slightly different level to its neighbour. The uneven walls feature niches and alcoves framed by ornate Moorish plasterwork. Malutka Fairy's Grotto has been decorated and furnished to combine traditional Andalucian and Moroccan styles - conjuring an exotic atmosphere and a bygone age whilst not compromising the need for modern amenities.

Inside the house there are 3 bedrooms - 1 with double bed plus a single (and/or travel cot), another double and a single room. It could accommodate 6 people in total. There is a fully equipped kitchen with cooker, fridge, microwave etc. There is also an entrance hall, breakfast room, a dining room and sitting room with satellite TV offering basic UK channels, DVD player and CD player. The bathroom has sink, toilet and bath with overhead shower attachment. A store room has fridge and freezer and storage cupboards.

Outside the house there is a gorgeous courtyard with potted plants and a canopy of wisteria and grape vine. This is very shady, equipped with table and chairs and a gas barbeque. A laundry room is for guests unlimited use. Two roof terraces offer stunning views. The lower terrace has a small outside kitchen and is accessed by a ladder from the lobby. The upper roof terrace is without shade and therefore great for sunbathing. There are 2 sunloungers and outdoor bath with a cold water supply only. This is accessed via a wooden staircase from the lower roof terrace.

Because of the lay out of the house it may not suitable for those with mobility difficulties. The owners live in the apartment extension to the cave house and are available for advice when needed, though always totally respectful of their guests' privacy.

Parking is possible outside the property. It is in a quiet cul-de-sac with little traffic and a rural aspect from behind. There are some allotments, fields, an old railway track which has been converted into a 'camino rural' for walkers and push bikers and views of the hills including Jabalcon.

The owner's have dogs and cats and tortoises (which they will keep away from you if you wish) and are happy to discuss you bringing your own pets.

For those who enjoy outdoor activities, there are pony trekking centres and bicycle hire in Baza plus walks in the Sierra de Baza national Park - a bird watcher's paradise.

Baza is the ideal location from which to visit places of interest in the area such as the gorge walk at Castril, Lake Negratin (with thermal baths and lakeside restaurants), the cave village at Guadix, the museum at Orce, Cabo de Gato (with its unspoiled beaches) and the Alhambra Palace in the historic city of Granada.

1 night stay is £50, 1 week is £300. Rentals include free Wi Fi, bottled gas, electricity, bed linen, towels (both bathroom and beach), tea towels, cool boxes, PLUS washing powder, bin liners, toilet rolls, tea bags, sugar, oil, vinegar, condements, selection of herbs and spices, selection of sauces/relishes.

Long lets of 6 months or more : £350 per month plus bills. The cost of rentals between 1 month and 6 months will be by negotiation and will depend on the exact duration of the intended stay. Airport pick ups and drop offs can be arranged.

A treasure trove

Thank you Malutka! As a family of 4 we all found great pleasure in discovering the treasures that Malutka Fairy Grotto has hidden away. Fairy corners, twinkling lights over the courtyard, and magic sprinkled over everything. There was a blaze of lights on the wall in the morning that we lead back to a crystal hanging at the entrance.
A bargain nightly price for up to 6 people could make this a great base in this interesting area. See my blog for things to do and more info.

“An enchanting, imaginative cave house!

Stepping inside the gates of the garden we felt instantly at home. The cave house is a feast for the senses, scrupulously clean and brilliantly equipped for either a fun family holiday or a romantic retreat. Our teenaged daughters loved it. The hosts are exceptionally kind, talented and interesting people who enhanced our holiday no end. The furnishings and ornaments inside are fascinating - and looking at everything is a treat in itself. We have never been happier with our accommodation. I defy anyone with a sense of fun, a passion for collecting and who is looking for accommodation out of the ordinary not to like the cave house. In addition it always provided a pleasantly cool refuge from the high summer temperatures. The surrounding countryside is spectacular and driving round the mountains a must. The town of Baza has much to recommend it but travellers must be prepared to attempt to speak some Spanish as English isn't much spoken - but then why should it be? A fabulous and fun family holiday! Thank you to our hosts Malutka and Colin for making us so welcome in the Cave House of Dreams.
“Delightful cave house

This enchanting cave house was a wonderful place to stay with its exotic interior decorations and delightful shaded garden where we could sit, eat, read and enjoy a cooling drink. The roof terrace provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding plains and mountains. The house was exceptionally well equipped with everything we needed. The interesting parts of Baza town are within a short walk of the house. Driving in the area was easy, with very little traffic and well signposted roads. Spectacular scenery in the surrounding area, nearby lake to swim in and larger towns like Granada within striking distance make this a perfect location for exploring this part of Spain.
Hosts Malutka and Colin were very welcoming and went out of their to help ensure our holiday was enjoyable. We would thoroughly recommend this house and we will certainly consider visiting again.
“Magical place to stay”

So thrilling to arrive and explore this intriguing place where the owners had prepared for us an exciting experience of discovery with lamp- and candle-lit corners to cause us to go 'ooh' and 'ahh'. We were still spotting treasures days later. It is a most fascinating place to stay. Malutka and Colin are the most wonderfully generous hosts (thanks to them we managed without a car). We were in need of quiet recuperation and did very little but were very happy with our books - my daughter up on the top terrace and me down with the tortoises and vines - and long lie-ins. Lovely!

“Enchanting, magical, memorable...”

Malutka's Cave House of Dreams is just that.....it is vivid and captivating when you are there, and when you wake up in the UK, you hold onto the memories for as long as you can.

The cave house is a world apart - a living work of art, with treasures to discover in every nook and cranny, yet comfortable, well equipped and you feel instantly at ease. It is wonderfully decorated, sympathetically restored and arranged very well for a family to stay in. We were blessed with hot, sunny weather, and found the patio garden to be an absolute treat in the evenings (drinking Spanish brandy!) as the garden is filled with scented plants and flowers, has lots of quirky wind-chimes and decorations, and is lit up tastefully with a variety of coloured lightings. The tortoise garden is a fun addition, and Malutka really knows how to care for them, as tortoises require a lot of care and attention.

We loved everything about the Cave House, and Malutka and Colin are helpful, interesting and fun people to talk to, and were very respectful of our privacy.

The highlights for our week: Lake Negratin - a startlingly blue lake set against a rugged red landscape of 'badlands'; Castril - lovely gorge walk; visiting the Alhambra in Granada (easy to do in one day); cave houses in Guadix and the cave house museum in Purellena; la Calahorra castle, stunning scenery everywhere you look; and we were lucky to see various 'penance processions' in Baza and the passion play in Cuevos del Campo.

Tips - a small hire car is helpful, and allow a bit longer to fully explore the area. Food shopping isn't a problem as there is a big Lidl which is open all day, including Sundays. Don't forget to visit Baza itself, as there is a lovely older part of town. (If you have time and have children/are into Spaghetti Westerns, go to Fort Bravo, approx. 1 hour away - a great day out!)

I think everyone should experience a cave house - and this one is great fun!

We stayed in this wonderful cave house for two nights and spent a memorable, amazing and thoroughly enjoyable time. It is the most interesting cave house we had ever stayed in with so many special touches, we have never taken so many photos in just two days! We slept so very well and visited many of the wonderful places in the area e.g. Negratin Lake and Natural Spa and Castril Gorge and were given a very warm welcome by the owners Colin and Malutka.
A must for anyone who loves unique places to stay
