About the Area
East Chiltington lies in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty traversing the south of England, and known for its nationally rare chalk downland & associated ecology, and protected as a National Park. Directly outside the Hut, there is a large network of public foot & bridle paths along which visitors can immerse themselves in the countryside; walks, maps & directions are provided at the accommodation. Cycling, horse-riding, paragliding and hot air ballooning are also on offer in the vicinity. The city of Brighton, famous for its Royal Pavilion, pebble beach & pier, restaurant & cultural scene, is 13 miles away. Also, there are spectacular coastal walks at the Seven Sisters Country Park/Heritage Coastline (also popular for bird watching & canoeing) - 18 miles away. Both Brighton & the Heritage Coastline are accessible by train (Plumpton to Eastbourne or via Lewes to Seaford; via Lewes to Brighton) from the Hut, as well as Charleston House & Berwick Church associated with Virginia Woolf/Bloomsbury Circle (via Lewes to Berwick). Glyndebourne Opera House, the Bluebell Railway & many NT properties are also located in the area.
Getting Here - Public Transport
London Victoria is one hour distant by train & after alighting at Plumpton Station there is a scenic, cross-country 20-minute walk to the Hut (instructions provided). The Southern Train’s London Victoria/Ore/Hastings via Gatwick Airport service runs hourly outside morning & evening rush hour (when there are more trains). If you are carrying a lot of luggage, we also suggest the Thames Link service from St Pancras International (which also stops in the City of London & Gatwick Airport) to Burgess Hill, & catching a cab from there .
