Treat yourself to some well deserved rest and relaxation at these gorgeous millpond-side huts near Shaftesbury. Book 1 or both huts.
Stay at a working stoneground flour mill, on the north Dorset border with Somerset and Wiltshire, a mile south of the historic town of Shaftesbury, in a glamping hut for 2 guests - or take both for 4 guests. John's Hut or Miller's Hut are overlooking the millpond and with their own view. It is an idyllic spot to get comfy and wile away the hours with a good book.
There is a field kitchen a few strides from the huts and for your comfort, a flushing loo and hot shower can be found in a bright washroom in the mill yard, a minutes walk away. Whilst both huts have electricity, the field kitchen is lit by twinkling fairy lights and candles (there is enough power for the fridge and toaster!). There's something magical about spending time under a tin roof. They are a little bit different with a sense of history and heritage, a mill has been here so long it’s mentioned in the Doomsday book.
Characterful John's Hut is the larger hut and comfortably spacious for a longer stay. A small double bed has a supportive mattress, dressed with pretty ticking and an all season hypoallergenic duvet made from 100% grade A long-fibre Mulbery silk. A bijou Salamander stove will keep your evenings warm and toasty. Should you wish to stay cosy in the hut, sitting at the table with a brew and a slice of cake picked up from a rural farm shop, the blue Hungarian dresser is thoughtfully stocked. What else? Hammocks are strung between the trees by the millpond and in the summer an old French day bed with its original mattress, rugs and cushions create the perfect retreat. Through the gate and under the trees by the water you will also find a table and chairs. For evening warmth huddle around the fire pit and chase stars under the exceptionally dark nocturnal skies. There's a tripod and grill to use, plus fire wood provided for each night of your stay, so why not enjoy sizzling some sausages with your glass of wine. Under the hut you will find a 'belly box' with space for storage.
Not just for shepherds, Miller's Hut offers a cosy and homely stay with a small, comfy double 'floating platform' bed that when you open the stable door looks directly out onto the millpond, what better way to start the day! Add to that a hot cup of tea or coffee and you have heaven on earth right there. Outside you can relax on a comfy chair or simply unfurl a picnic blanket on the grass and listen to the sounds of nature around you. Come the evening be sure to light the firepit and toast some marshmallows whilst looking out for shooting stars in the exceptionally dark night sky.
Breakfast is delivered to the field kitchen a few strides from your hut. A delicious basket of supplies, including homemade bread, muesli, yoghurt, fruit, jams, milk and juice. This is included in your stay and a great way to boost your energy for a day exploring the local area. If you have more time, locally sourced breakfast hampers can be purchased for you to cook over the firepit and include homemade bread, butter, jams, milk, sausages, bacon, eggs, beans and more for just £25 (for two), £35 (for four).
The field kitchen is a rustic old tin shed with a table and chairs, and an area to prepare meals. It is equipped with crockery, small fridge, two stove gas hob, hob kettle, toaster and further cooking equipment/utensils as well as store cupboard essentials such as tea, coffee, sugar, oil and salt & pepper. Washing up is available here too, though you'll have to boil the kettle! Pure spring water for drinking and cooking is in the 8L Kilner glass water dispenser and there's a tap in the mill yard (again pure spring water). In the evenings eat by candlelight beneath twinkling fairy lights.
Gold Hill, Shaftesbury is a walk across the fields and up the hill, about 30 minutes from the huts and famed for that 70s ad. Locally you can explore the beauty of Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset from this central base. With Stonehenge, Glastonbury and Salisbury just a short drive away, you can chose from the mystical and historic or modern and musical. **OWNER'S COVID COMMENT**
We have incorporated the following principles into hosting:
As an organic business, and for health and environmental reasons, we like to keep our use of chemicals to an absolute minimum and choose to fog the huts with Electrox Water, a chemical free sterlising water, after they have been cleaned.
We would like to reassure guests that bed linen and towels are always washed at high temperatures.
We have run self check-in since opening.
Mill employees will maintain a safe distance from you.
We ask for prompt check out at 10am so that the huts can be deep cleaned and aired.
